Choose your base before choosing your tours
For a first visit, prioritize the walking distance to places you want to enjoy each evening. A central address can simplify meals and meeting arrangements, but ask about street noise, stairs and vehicle access. A hotel described as being in San Cristóbal is not automatically inside every tour’s pickup zone. Send the full address before reserving.
Arriving via Tuxtla
Separate your airport transfer from your first excursion unless a product explicitly combines them. Share your arrival time and accommodation with the transfer provider. The canyon sightseeing transfer has specific flight eligibility and ends in San Cristóbal; it should only be chosen when those arrangements fit. Leave arrival day flexible rather than scheduling a fixed-time museum or long tour immediately after landing.
Pack for different climates
San Cristóbal is a highland city around 2,200 meters above sea level. Bring layers for cooler mornings and evenings, a rain layer, and shoes with grip for cobblestones. Canyon and jungle outings can feel very different from your base: pack for the destination as well as the city. Keep your first afternoon gentle if the journey has left you tired.

Make the city part of the trip
Leave time for pedestrian streets, markets and neighborhood cafés instead of treating San Cristóbal only as a departure point. Build a short city walk around the central plaza and nearby streets, then choose a museum or cooking experience that interests you. Check opening arrangements before setting out; churches and cultural venues may change access for events.
Money, meals and daily logistics
Keep some Mexican pesos for small purchases, meals and extras that are not part of your tour price. Read whether prices are per person or per group. Download your voucher and pickup address before leaving reliable internet. For a pre-dawn excursion, arrange breakfast and access out of your accommodation the night before.
Choose one landscape day and one culture day
A balanced first trip might pair Sumidero with Chamula and Zinacantán, keeping another day for the city. Add Montebello and El Chiflón only if you have room for a long day. Compare total outing time rather than distance alone, and keep a flexible window before flights or important onward transport.
